Yesterday was the last race in the SoCalCross series and I heard the course was a good one, so I went out for my second cross race of the season to check it out. We got there a little late and I was in a rush so I only got one lap warm up and a little spin, which was not the best pre-race prep.
There were some pretty fast guys in the 35plus 1,2,3's including the district state champion in the 35 & 40+ age group from the week before and also the series leader. I got the hole shot and led for the first half lap before I slowed up and let someone else pull through. The course had two dismounts and nothing to bunny hop, but it did have some technical sections which was to my advantage. After about 4 laps it came down to 3 of us still together. With 2 laps remaining I got about a 5 bike length lead through one of the tech sections, so I decided to open the throttle a bit and see if I could put some more time on the other two and see if they could bridge the gap. I opened the gap to about 20-30 seconds and was able to keep it there to the finish, giving me my second win of the year.
I felt pretty good in the race and was happy with my performance but today my legs are paying the price. Not sure if it was from the efforts or from the two running sections since I never run.
Hopefully I will find some time and another race to do in January. Don't think I will have the time in Dec. to do any more races, but we will see.
