Helping Others
Saturday I attended a TACA event, which stands for "Talk About Curing Autism". I have a very good friend who has a boy with autism and TACA had a fund raising Poker tournament with many real pro poker players on hand along with some other pro athletes like Jim Everet, who was the QB for the Rams, Ernesto Fonseca, and myself. Jenny McCarthy was the host of the event, as her son has autism and she has been in the press a lot lately doing all she can to increase the awareness of this disorder that is affecting 1 out of every 165 babies being born these days, opposed to 1 out of every 10,000 17 years ago. The event was a lot of fun and the night raised over $400,000 for the disorder.
Today Paula and I spent all day in the garden. Yep, that's what I said... we were gardening all day. Planting new plants, trimming trees, roses, etc., fertilizing and cleaning up. Not a fun way to spend the entire Sunday, but the yard looks nice and it needed to get done.
So Sunday night I am laying on the couch watching "extreme make over" which is a show where they rebuild a families house in one week. They find a unique family that really needs the help and gives them a great new house to live in. Tonight was a family from Montana who was basically living in a chicken coupe. The mother had a disorder that had something to do with her brain, skull and spinal cord that was hereditory, so her 3 girls all had this same problem. It can be life threatening and it causes a lot of pain to live with.
The long and short of this is, is that this mother was helping not only her girls, but families all over that have to live with this teribile disorder and Exreme Make Over was doing something for the family that was doing so much for others and needed some help of their own. The same can be said for what TACA, Jenny McCarthy, and everyone involved last night did for autism. It was great to see so many people give their time and donations for such a great cause. When I see how some of these people really make a difference in others lives, it inspires me to do more to make a difference. These kind of people are the ones who really make a difference in this world.
